Inspiring Minds. Strengthening Community.

The Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA is proud to be the new home of the Shapiro Lecture Series—a dynamic annual event that brings our community together for an evening of insight, inspiration, and connection.

Established in 1998, the Betty and Bernard S. (Z”L) Shapiro Family Endowment was created to support programs that strengthen families and build community through free public lectures. Over the years, the Shapiro Lecture Series has welcomed internationally recognized voices to Montreal, including Gloria Steinem, Alan Dershowitz, Debra Gilboa, and many more—each offering powerful perspectives on the issues that shape our world.

The first featured speaker at the Y’s Shapiro Lecture was Leah Goldstein—world champion kickboxer, Israeli undercover officer, and elite cycling champion. Leah’s incredible story of courage, perseverance, and determination inspired us all to push our limits, never give up, and go after what we truly want. Her message continues to motivate our community to face challenges with strength and purpose.

From human development and mental health to personal growth and resilience, the Shapiro Lecture Series continues to spark meaningful dialogue and inspire lifelong learning within our community.

The Shapiro lectures are free of charge thanks to the support from the Betty and Bernard S. (Z”L) Shapiro Family Endowment.
