More Than a Workout: Turning Your Passion for Fitness into a Profession
By Louise Malone, Manager of Fitness Engagement, Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA
For many people, fitness starts as a personal journey.
It begins with a goal, a challenge, a desire to feel stronger, healthier, or more confident. Along the way, something unexpected often happens. Fitness becomes more than a hobby; it becomes a passion. And for some, that passion sparks an even bigger question:
Could I make a career out of helping others?
The answer is yes.
The fitness industry offers more opportunities than ever for anyone wanting to make a meaningful impact while building a rewarding career. Today’s fitness professionals are coaches, educators, motivators, mentors, and leaders who help people improve not only their physical health, but their confidence, resilience, and overall quality of life.
A career in fitness can take many paths. Some professionals become personal trainers, group fitness instructors, strength and conditioning coaches, wellness specialists, fitness managers, entrepreneurs, or educators. Areas of specialty can include post-rehabilitation of injuries, training amateur teams, and working with medical conditions (Parkinson’s, diabetes, arthritis). The skills developed through coaching, program design, and relationship building can open doors both inside and beyond the fitness industry.
What separates great fitness professionals from the rest isn’t simply knowledge of exercise. It’s the ability to connect with people, understand their goals, inspire confidence, and create lasting change. Those skills are best learned through mentorship and real-world experience alongside industry leaders.
This is why I am excited to announce a brand-new program launching this September 2026 at the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA. The Coaching Lab
Learn From Two of Montreal’s Most Respected Fitness Leaders
This fall, I will be partnering with renowned coach and fitness expert Dave Estrada to offer an exclusive Certification for Fitness Coaching Program. This course is designed to prepare individuals to take the next step in their fitness journey.
Whether you’re considering becoming a personal trainer, looking to enhance your coaching skills, preparing for certification, or exploring a future career in health and fitness, this program will provide the practical knowledge, mentorship, and guidance needed to succeed.
Together, Dave and I bring decades of experience working with athletes, fitness enthusiasts, trainers, and clients of all ages and abilities. Throughout our careers, we’ve helped thousands of individuals reach their goals, build confidence, and unlock their potential.
Now we’re opening the door for the next generation of fitness professionals.
What You’ll Learn
Participants will gain valuable insight into the realities of working in the fitness industry, including:
- Client assessment and goal setting
- Coaching and communication skills
- Motivation and behaviour change strategies
- Strength and conditioning principles
- Professional development and career planning
- Building confidence as a coach and leader
Most importantly, you’ll learn how to work with people, not just programs.
The most successful trainers understand that fitness is about relationships. Clients don’t simply return because of the workouts you prescribe; they return because of the trust, support, and accountability you provide.
Why Now?
Demand for qualified fitness professionals continues to grow as more people prioritize health, wellness, and preventative care. Fitness professionals are increasingly recognized as important partners in helping individuals live healthier, more active lives.
If you’ve ever considered turning your passion for fitness into a rewarding career, there has never been a better time to get started.
This September, take the first step at the Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA and discover what’s possible when passion meets purpose.
