February is Heart Health Month.

Here’s how to give your heart the love it deserves.

As we step further into February, let’s make sure we’re showing our hearts – the most vital organ in our bodies — some well-deserved love. It is, after all, officially Heart Health Month, which means it’s the perfect time to prioritize and pamper our cardiovascular systems.

Our hearts work tirelessly day in and day out, pumping blood to every nook and cranny of our bodies. So, why not give this hardworking muscle the attention it deserves?

Here are a few friendly tips and reminders to help you make the most out of Heart Health Month:

1. Get moving (at The Sylvan Adams YM-YWHA!)

Regular physical activity not only strengthens your heart but also boosts your overall well-being. February may harbour a substantial winter chill, but inside the beautiful walls of The Y, it’s warm and welcoming as ever. Now is the perfect time to invest in a Y Fit or Health Club Membership (we also offer corporate memberships!), or to try something new at our state-of-the-art fitness facilities. Some of our specialty classes include PowerWatts cycling, Reformer Pilates, a women’s only Powerlifting Class, and so much more. Plus, Health Club Members have access to the therapeutic warmth of our exclusive saunas and steam rooms.

2. Heart-healthy eating

They say the best way to a person’s heart is through their stomach, and we couldn’t agree more! Incorporating more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins into your meals has proven heart health benefits, along with olive oil, avocado, nuts, and seeds. Swap out overly processed snacks for heart-healthy alternatives, but don’t forget to indulge in some dark chocolate now and then, which has been shown to have heart-protecting properties.

3. Know your numbers

Schedule a check-up with your healthcare provider to keep tabs on your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and other key indicators of heart health. Knowledge is power, and understanding your numbers allows you to make the most informed decisions about your lifestyle.

4. Stress less

According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, chronic stress can take a toll on your heart. Take time out for self-care, practice mindfulness, and surround yourself with positivity. Whether it’s a good book, a soothing bath, or spending time with loved ones, find what helps you unwind and make it a regular part of your routine. Bonus: Become a member at The Y Health Club and gain access to our exclusive lounge area, saunas and steam rooms. Whatever you choose here, our welcoming vibe is sure to help you feel your best.
